Authorities in Steuben County are investigating a house fire early Monday that left one occupant dead.

Numerous fire departments were called around 4:40 a.m. after a passing motorist spotted a house engulfed in flames on New Galen Road in the Town of Wayland and called 911.

State police and the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services/Fire Investigation Team also were called to the scene to determine the fire's cause and origin.

During the investigation, a body was discovered inside the burned-out structure, according to state police at Bath.

Steuben County Coroner Brian May responded to the scene and ordered the body removed to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the victim's identity and cause of death.

The investigation is ongoing. Fire departments from Perkinsville, Atlanta, Wayland, Cohocton, South Dansville, Dansville and Wallace responded to the scene, with Avoca on standby.
